Club Mont Ste. Marie operates a highly successful, competitive Alpine ski racing program for children aged 8 to 18. At all ages we focus on the long-term development of our racers in a fun, safe and appropriately individually challenging setting within a team environment.
In U10 the focus is on balance, movement and having fun. Skills development emphasizes stance and balance as well as working on the vertical and rotational planes. Timing and coordination is also worked on while building fundamentals including the ability to link turns on all terrain. Skiers are introduced to training environments that build technical skills and are also introduced to tactical racing competencies. Competition disciplines include Giant Slalom, Slalom.
In U12 athletes build on the skills learned in U10. Development focuses on fore and aft balance and lateral balance with more specific emphasis creating energy and speed in the turn. The overall focus is on movement and instilling a love of the sport of ski racing. Competition disciplines include Giant Slalom, Slalom and Kombi.
The emphasis in U14 is on refining skills including increased balance awareness for varied terrain, turn shape and snow conditions. The overall focus is on developing specific motor skills, coordination, and dynamic ski and racing abilities. Competition disciplines include Giant Slalom, Slalom and Super-G. Athletes are introduced to speed events in a specialized training camp and introductory Super-G race event.
In U16 the focus on stance and balance continues. More specifically, athletes work on their physical alignment for greater power, strength and management of forces within the turn. Specific skill work includes refining pressure control to further learn how to accelerate and gain momentum. Speed work continues. Competition disciplines include Super G, Giant Slalom and Slalom.
U18 continues work on stance and balance with a greater emphasis on sequence of motion. Athletes are working to refine their individual abilities while continuing to challenge for solid movement patterns on their skis, highly technical skier abilities and sound tactical decision making. They continue to challenge Specific skill work focuses on edging skills and arch. Competition disciplines include Super G, Giant Slalom and Slalom.
